Find quick answers about our experiences, routes, island life, and transportation logistics from Panama City.
On a shared catamaran, you stay in a private cabin and share the common areas, meals, and sailing experience with other travelers. During the trip, the catamaran may move between different islands depending on sea conditions and the embarkation and disembarkation schedules of other guests.
An island stay is based in one location and offers simpler infrastructure, a slower pace, and closer contact with nature and Guna culture.
There is no single option that is best for everyone. The right choice depends on your travel style, comfort expectations, available time, and budget. We help you identify the experience that best matches what you are looking for.
No. The cabin you reserve is exclusively for you and the people included in your reservation. You do not share your cabin with strangers.
The indoor and outdoor common areas, meals, and sailing experience are shared with other guests. The number of guests varies by catamaran size, cabin configuration, and confirmed reservations for each period.
Bathrooms may be private or shared depending on the catamaran. This information is listed in each option’s description.
What is included varies by catamaran or bungalow and is detailed on the page for each experience and in the proposal provided before booking.
Accommodation and meals are included, along with the services and activities specifically listed for the selected option. Transportation between Panama City and San Blas, Guna territory entrance fees, and other additional services are NOT included.
Before confirming your reservation, we clearly explain what is included and which expenses must be paid separately.
There are two main ways to reach San Blas.
By land: a shared 4x4 picks you up at the hotel listed in your reservation at around 5:00 a.m.
Tourist ground transportation in Guna Yala is operated by authorized local providers and follows schedules established by Guna authorities. The drive takes about 3 hours.
After arriving at the locally managed port, there is normally a wait before boarding the speedboat. The marine transfer typically takes 40 to 90 minutes depending on your destination and conditions.
By air: private small aircraft can reach airstrips in Guna Yala in approximately 40 minutes.
Flights are subject to weather, aircraft availability, route, passenger count, and strict total-weight limits.
We guide you through all the steps and help you choose the most suitable option for your experience.
Shared catamarans require a minimum stay of 3 nights.
We recommend 4 to 6 nights for a better balance of sailing, island time, and flexibility to reach different areas when conditions and shared operations allow.
Island bungalows require a minimum stay of 2 nights, and we generally recommend 3 nights.
It depends on the selected option.
Most catamaran cabins have private bathrooms, while some options use shared bathrooms.
The bathroom setup is clearly identified in each catamaran description.
All of the island bungalows currently offered by San Blas Shared have a private bathroom.
Some catamarans have air conditioning, while most rely on natural ventilation and fans. Availability and operating conditions vary by boat.
The bungalows do NOT have air conditioning and use natural ventilation and fans.
If air conditioning is essential for your comfort, tell us before booking so we can recommend only compatible options.
Internet coverage in San Blas is limited.
Some catamarans have Starlink, and cellular service can be intermittent. The island accommodation has Starlink, but because this is a remote destination using satellite connectivity, service can be interrupted for hours or even days.
If internet access is important for your trip, tell us during the planning process. Even so, we do not recommend scheduling work or activities that require a continuous, stable connection.
Yes.
Shared catamarans can be a very good option for solo travelers who want to experience San Blas without reserving an entire boat.
You have a private cabin and share only the common areas, meals, and sailing experience with other guests.
Depending on the option, pricing may be based on the cabin rather than per person, so check single-occupancy conditions before booking. Some island stays may also accept solo travelers depending on availability and occupancy rules.
Yes. Children are welcome and often enjoy San Blas, particularly the generally calm waters and close contact with nature.
However, San Blas Shared experiences are designed primarily for couples, solo travelers, and small groups of adults who are comfortable sharing the experience with other guests.
For families, our recommendation depends on the children’s ages, the group profile, comfort expectations, and selected experience. Tell us the ages of all children before booking so we can evaluate suitable options. Minimum ages may vary by catamaran or accommodation.
Depending on the children’s ages and group composition, a private experience may provide more freedom, comfort, and flexibility for a family routine.
Meals are included in all experiences and are prepared aboard the catamarans or by the team responsible for the island accommodation.
Because San Blas is remote, ingredient availability is more limited than in Panama City. Dietary restrictions, allergies, and specific needs must be disclosed before booking so we can consult the responsible team and confirm whether they can be accommodated.
For severe allergies, provide complete information before confirmation. Because of infrastructure and storage limitations, it may not be possible to adapt every menu or guarantee the absence of cross-contamination.
We recommend small, lightweight, preferably soft-sided luggage. Large rigid suitcases take up significant space aboard catamarans and in bungalows. More importantly, both ground transportation — including speedboats — and small-aircraft transportation have limited space and load capacity.
Exceeding stated limits can affect safety and may prevent luggage from being transported.
Bring lightweight clothing, swimwear, sun protection, insect repellent, enough personal medication for the entire trip, the original documents required for entry, and U.S. dollars in cash.
Because electricity is limited, DO NOT bring high-consumption appliances such as hair dryers or flat irons. Their use is prohibited aboard the catamarans and in the bungalows.
Small aircraft have strict weight limits. All passengers and all luggage are weighed before boarding.
Yes. Bring U.S. dollars in cash. There are no banks or ATMs on the islands, and card payments are NOT generally available.
Cash may be needed for local fees, handicrafts, additional services, and other purchases during the trip.
San Blas can be visited year-round.
The climate is tropical, with warm temperatures in every season.
Historically, December through May tends to receive less rain. However, rain is possible at any time of year, and no season can guarantee completely sunny days.
Weather in Panama City can be different from conditions in San Blas. Rain or cloudy skies do not automatically cancel an experience. Captains can adapt navigation and select more protected areas. When conditions are unsafe, transportation or navigation may be changed or suspended by the responsible authorities.
Applicable modification and cancellation policies are provided before booking.
We do not work with fixed routes or itineraries.
No. We do not operate fixed routes or predetermined island-by-island itineraries.
Sea conditions, winds, and currents change daily. On shared catamarans, navigation must also consider the embarkation and disembarkation locations and schedules of other guests.
The captain defines the route according to the conditions each day, always prioritizing safety and the quality of the experience. Our goal is not to complete a checklist of islands, so we cannot guarantee a specific island in advance.
Guna Yala is an autonomous Indigenous territory with its own authorities, rules, and systems of organization. Throughout your experience, follow the guidance of local communities, crew members, and accommodation staff.
Do not touch starfish, coral, or other marine life; do not remove natural objects; and do not leave waste on beaches or in the sea. Ask permission before photographing or filming residents.
Tourist fishing is not permitted. Drone use must be discussed in advance and is not allowed during transportation or at the port.
Respecting local rules is part of the experience and helps preserve Guna culture and the San Blas ecosystem.
San Blas is remote and medical infrastructure in the region is very limited. There are no hospitals near the catamarans or bungalows.
In an emergency, it may first be necessary to travel by boat to a port, community, or airstrip and then continue by land or air to a medical facility. Timing and evacuation method depend on location, weather, sea conditions, and transportation availability. San Blas Shared and local operators do not provide medical services and cannot guarantee immediate emergency evacuation.
Travelers who require continuous medical monitoring, depend on essential equipment, or have a condition that could require immediate care should consult their physician and disclose their needs before booking.
Because of the region’s isolation, limited medical care, and ground and marine transportation conditions, we do not recommend this experience for pregnant travelers at any stage of pregnancy.
We recommend travel insurance that includes medical care and emergency evacuation.
Every traveler looks for something different in San Blas. Our team helps you compare shared catamarans and bungalows, clarify questions, and choose the option most compatible with your profile, expectations, and budget.
